Analytics starts with the right question

A plain guide for leaders: what analytics can actually tell you, why data quality decides the answer, and where the real work lives.

Most businesses have more data than they have questions worth answering with it. That is the honest starting point for any conversation about analytics. The tools are capable and storage is cheap. What tends to be missing is a clear question, and data clean enough to trust the answer that comes back.

What analytics can tell you

Analytics does a few different jobs, and it helps to know which one you are asking for. The most common is describing what happened: sales last quarter, which products moved, where customers dropped off. That is useful, and most reporting stops there.

A harder question is why it happened, which means connecting causes rather than counting events. Harder still is estimating what is likely to happen next, so you can act before the fact rather than after it. Each step asks more of the data underneath it. A rough count of last month's orders is forgiving. A forecast that shapes a hiring or stock decision is not.

The answer is only as good as the data

Every one of those jobs rests on the same foundation: the quality of the data feeding it. If the records are incomplete, inconsistent, or scattered across systems that do not agree with each other, the analysis inherits every one of those flaws.

A confident chart built on poor data is worse than no chart, because it invites a decision you would not otherwise make. Reconciling sources, agreeing definitions, deciding which system is the version of record: this is unglamorous work, and it is where most of the value is won or lost.

Closing the gap between data and insight

The gap between having data and having insight is where the real work sits. Closing it is less about buying a platform and more about deciding what you need to know, then building the discipline to collect and maintain the data that answers it.

Start with a decision you actually have to make. Work back to the question behind it. Then check whether the data you hold can answer that question honestly. That sequence is usually worth more than any single tool. Realm Digital has spent more than two decades helping organisations do exactly this, turning the data they already hold into decisions they can defend.
