What separates a successful integration from an expensive one

Integration projects fail quietly and expensively. A large business sinks a fortune into a system that never quite works, and someone has to explain it to the board. The technical detail varies. The root cause is usually the same: the wrong partner, chosen before the hard questions were asked.

A botched integration rarely comes down to one broken component. It comes down to a partner who did not have the experience to see the complexity coming, or the candour to raise it. The cost lands later, as missed deadlines, a blown budget, and a system the business has to work around rather than with.

Experience you can check

The first thing to look for is a track record on similar work, and clients who will vouch for it. Integration is where the difficult detail lives: data that does not map cleanly between systems, and interfaces that behave differently in production than they did in a demo. A partner who has done it before will tell you where the risk sits before you sign, not after.

A partner who will disagree with you

The most useful partner is the one willing to challenge your plan. A team that agrees with every request, or is tied to one narrow set of tools, will quietly pick the approach that suits them rather than the one that suits the problem. You want the opposite: someone confident enough to say the chosen path will not work, and to propose a better one.

Build for what comes next

A good integration solves today's problem without boxing you in tomorrow. That means thinking a step ahead about what else will need to connect, and being ready to change course when the original plan stops making sense. Realm has spent more than two decades joining systems together for clients in retail, financial services and healthcare. The projects that go well are the ones where the partner was chosen on judgement, not price alone.
