Online retail in South Africa is still under-built

South African shoppers are ready to buy online. Local retail has been slow to meet them, and that gap is worth taking seriously.

Most South Africans carry a capable device and use it for a large share of their daily lives. They compare, research and pay online without a second thought. Local retail has been slower to meet them, so online still accounts for a small slice of what people spend.

Set that against markets like the UK, the US and China and the difference is plain. Online retail there is a mature channel, not a side project. South Africa sits well behind, and a gap that wide is an opening rather than a warning for any business prepared to invest properly in the build.

The technology is rarely the constraint

Businesses often hesitate on cost or doubt the return. The build itself is a smaller problem than it once was. Mature open-source platforms cover most needs without a bespoke system, so the question is fit rather than whether a suitable option exists.

The supporting pieces have caught up too. Progressive web apps narrow the gap between a website and a native app, and models such as drop shipping take the weight of holding and moving stock off the retailer. None of this removes the work, but it removes the old excuses.

The hard part is choosing who builds it

The real barrier is trust. Software delivery is full of confident promises, and telling a capable partner from a plausible one is difficult before any work starts. Get that choice wrong and the platform costs more, ships later and earns less than it should.

The technology is rarely the hard part. Deciding what to change, in what order, and what to leave alone is. We have built and run online retail in South Africa for more than two decades, and the discipline that holds it together is a clear plan followed by careful execution against it.
